Anna Maxwell Martin, the steely star of the BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens’s Bleak House, is to take up the daggers as Lady Macbeth when she makes her debut at the Young Vic in a radical new production, opposite her stage husbandJohn Heffernan.SOURCE
Macbeth, which will open at London’s Young Vic in November and then transfer to the partner theatres, Birmingham Rep and Home in Manchester, will feature a company of actors and dancers. It is being jointly created by director Carrie Cracknell and choreographer Lucy Guerin, who brought an acclaimed Medea to the National Theatre last year.
Heffernan, also appearing for the first time at the Young Vic, recently starred in the RSC Oppenheimer, and in the BBC’s gothic fantasy adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, and as Edward II at the National Theatre.
Maxwell Martin, who won early critical acclaim with a six-hour performance as Lyra in the National Theatre’s sell-out adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, went on to take Bafta best actress awards both for Bleak House, and for her startling performance as N in the television film version of Claire Allan’s novel about mental illness, Poppy Shakespeare. The Guardian’s Michael Billington said her performance as Isabella in the Almeida’s Measure for Measure, was“excellent”.
Other productions in the new Young Vic season include the previously announced appearance of Romola Garai in a new production of Measure for Measure; a new version of August Strindberg’s Creditors, written by David Greigwill and directed by Rikki Henry, who won the 2015 Genesis Future Directors award, with a company including Joylon Coy, Tom Rhys Harries and Gyuri Sarossy; and Marguerite Duras’s most famous play La Musica, featuring return visits to the company by Emily Barclay and Sam Troughton.
Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Bleak House, And Then There Were None) will play a major role in the final two episodes of Line Of Duty series five. The Bafta-winning actor will appear as Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael, a senior anti-corruption detective brought in from outside of AC-12. Viewers will first meet DCS Carmichael this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
